October 13th | Roulette Event Space

a night forty years in the making

One night. Four decades. What comes next.

Tuesday, October 13, 2026

Brooklyn, New York

ABOUT THE EVENING

For four decades, En Garde Arts has created performances in the places where New York lives: streets and stoops, parks and plazas, apartments and abandoned buildings, piers, storefronts, and everywhere in between.

The evening begins at 300 Ashland with the world premiere of PRELUDE, written by Chuck Mee and adapted and directed by Anne Bogart as part of BAM’s Next Wave Festival.

Following the performance, we’ll take to the streets together, processing through Brooklyn to Roulette for dinner, performances, tributes, reunions, and a celebration of En Garde Arts at forty.

At the center of the evening, we are proud to honor Anne Bogart and Chuck Mee, two singular artists whose decades of collaboration, experimentation, and radical imagination embody so much of what En Garde Arts has always stood for.

This is a celebration of where we’ve been. And an investment in where we go next.

FOUR DECADES. COUNTLESS ARTISTS. ONE CITY.

For forty years, En Garde Arts has invited artists to make work differently.

To take the risk.

To follow the strange idea.

To leave the theatre building behind.

To immagine New York itself as a stage.

Along the way, En Garde has brought together generations of extraordinary artists and audiences around performances that could only happen in a pariticular place, at a particular moment, in this particular city.

Help us keep making impossible possible

As we commemorate our 40th anniversary, we’re reflecting on the last four decades that have shaped us, and looking ahead to the future we’re ready to build. The next chapter of En Garde Arts is one defined by braver artistic collaborations, deeper community partnerships, and new approaches to site-specific performance that provoke, unite, and transform.

The vision that carried us here is the vision that carries us forward: art belongs everywhere and to everyone.

Your donation helps us:

  • Develop new works with boundary-pushing artists

  • Bring performance to neighborhoods across all five boroughs

  • Create accessible, site-specific experiences that welcome audiences who may never set foot inside a traditional theater

  • Support the next generation of storytellers shaping the future of performance

  • Invest in bold new projects for our landmark anniversary season

Your contribution directly fuels the artists, productions, and community partnerships that define our work.

Whether you first experienced En Garde Arts on a pier in the 90s, or more recently at a bar on the edge of the city, you are part of our story, and part of our future.

Thank you for supporting the next chapter of En Garde Arts.

“As the founder and artistic director of En Garde Arts, Ms. Hamburger presents theatrical events in nontraditional settings. During its nine years of operation, En Garde has found site-specific performance spaces in the unlikeliest of circumstances - near a Brooklyn pier, on a Harlem street, in abandoned storefronts, warehouses and churches, in the meatpacking district and around the Lake in Central Park (and up in the Belvedere Tower). With the audience enveloped by the action, En Garde is a valuable link between virtual reality and imaginative drama.

Usually the site and subject come first, then a relevant play is written. Every location becomes a discovery. Three one-acts about the bohemian Chelsea Hotel were staged in 1989 in rooms at the hotel. Behind the derelict facade of West 42d Street, Mac Wellman's 1990 "Crowbar" briefly reclaimed the Victory Theater for a ghost story about that building's once-illustrious past.

As the architect Hugh Hardy, an admirer of the company, says: The troupe "makes people aware of the city, makes them respond to places." It uses environmental art as an instrument of social commentary.” – Mel Gussow, The New York Times, Jan. 1994
